Thank heavens for Monty by Robert Philip
Mar 20, 2008:
In the heady days of 1983 and 1987, Europe's Ryder Cup team contained four Scots - Sam Torrance, Ken Brown, Sandy Lyle, Bernard Gallacher ('83) and Gordon Brand jnr ('87) - and as recently as 1999 we boasted three representatives in Colin Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie and Andrew Coltart.
Alas, in the last three contests, Monty has stood alone under the St Andrew's Cross and, heaven forbid, should the big fella fail to make the 12 either for Valhalla, Louisville, this September, either on merit or as a captain's pick courtesy of Nick Faldo, the home of golf will be without a Ryder Cup presence for the first time since 1937.
